Journalist Sopuruchi Onwuka has described the outcome of the case against Diezani Alison-Madueke as “predictable”.

Writing for Oracle Intelligence, Onwuka detailed Diezani’s legacy of work during her time in Nigeria’s energy sector, arguing that the protracted legal battles unfairly obscured her substantive industry impacts. Onwuka asserts that the collapse of the UK bribery case was an inevitable result of prosecutors relying heavily on circumstantial “lifestyle” evidence, rather than providing concrete proof of her directly manipulating government contracts.

The article calls for an objective re-evaluation of her professional record now that she has been cleared by the London jury. Emphasising Diezani’s pioneering milestones and significant contributions to the advancement of Nigeria’s petroleum industry – including her instrumental role in driving the Nigerian Content Act, which hugely empowered local participation in the oil and gas industry.

Onwuka rightly frames Diezani’s legacy as one of the most consequential in the history of the sector, and notes that its significant beneficial impact deserves to be recognised beyond the political dirt.

Following the not guilty verdict delivered in Southwark Crown Court, Diezani spoke to the BBC to tell her side of the story after having been legally silenced for 11 years.

She said, “I’ve not been allowed to travel. I’ve not been allowed to work. They destroyed my reputation and my integrity. I knew that I had never done anything nefarious and I had never done any of the heinous things I was being accused of doing.”

When asked about the issues that resulted in her trial arising in the first place she added, “The Nigerian authorities need to look into the processes and practices that they deploy in these cases. The long arm of the law when you go into other countries, particularly in politically motivated cases, needs to have a lot more sensitivity.”

Jurors found Diezani innocent of all six charges brought against her by prosecutors in London. 

Prosecutors had alleged she was guilty of bribery charges but they were unable to prove their case after a nearly 11 year investigation, during which Diezani was on bail and had her freedoms restricted.

After a decade of investigations a jury in London decided that Diezani was innocent of charges of corruption and accepting bribes.

After hearing all the evidence presented against her, the jurors found that Diezani had never acted improperly during her time as petroleum minister.

Speaking at a press conference in Abuja, the legal experts said that contradictions in the prosecution’s evidence had created overwhelming reasonable doubt.

They said, “There is no conclusive linkage between alleged benefits and contract awards … leaving the prosecution’s case legally fragile.”

During the press conference, it was also stated that the lack of sufficient evidence meant “criminal liability cannot arise.”

It has emerged that charges against Diezani were dropped before the trial at Southwark Crown Court began.

Allegations of improper performance of Diezani’s role as Minister of Petroleum were dismissed due to a lack of evidence.
